I am an avid catfish fisherman I love to chase my pole down the bank or having my boat tugged around during a fight. I have used all kinds of baits but my most reliable bait is on you can keep in your gear all year long without stinking you out. It is Bran Flakes I have been told a bunch of differant ways to prepare it but the straight bran way is the best. Get yourself a bowl or something to mix it in. Use water from the lake or river you are at put enough in to let the flakes soak it up then drain the water. Squish it up till it is total mush then add the same amount of dry flakes and squish it together you wanna squeeze it hard. If it is still really moist add more flakes till you get a stiff playdo texture. Add a ball of it around your treble hook and do not go to far from your pole. As soon as a big cat or carp takes it you better be ready. I have caught Flatheads, Blues, Channels, Bullheads and carp on this recipe. Plus this is a very cheap go to bait GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Emergency Stop Switch Replacement Boating
I recently purchased an 8HP outboard to power a small boat i use to fish locally with my grandkids. Being safety conscious I looked into buying a replacement Emergency Stop Switch lanyard and found it extremly pricey for a small u-shaped piece of plastic and cord lanyard. I solved this problem by shaving down one side of a clip clothes pin to the same thickness of the stop switch clip that came with the outboard. Attach a piece of line to the metal spring on the clothes pin and the other end to you wrist and you're ready to go.

Knots you should know General Fishing
I can't tell you how many times people ask me "What knots do you tie?, or "do you use snaps? When I first started fishing for bass bach in the early sixties, I used snaps, and after losing many a big fish from them breaking, I started to learn to tie some good knots. Now, there are more knots than you can absorb at one time, some are used for Freshwater, some for Salt, and some serve a dual purpose. If you learn to tie just a few basic knots that i will describe, you will get better action from the baits you use, and catch and LAND more fish!
The first knot you need to know is the one I use 90% of the time. It is called the PALOMAR KNOT. I like this knot because of its strength, and the fact that you can tie it on both mono and superlines, such as Fireline and Spiderline. The first thing you do is Double the line and make a loop about 4 inches long. Put the end of the loop through the eye of the lure or the hook.
Next, Hold the standing line between your thumb and forefinger, and grab the loop with your free hand and make a simple overhand knot.
Put the hook through the loop and draw the line while guiding the loop over the top of the eyelet.
Last, Pull the tag end of the line to tighten the knot snugly. Trim the tag end to 1/4 inch or so. Practice this a few times, and soon you'll be able to do it with your eyes closed or in the dark.
The next knot is called the TRILENE KNOT. I used to call this knot the cinch knot when I first started tying it 30years ago. It rarely slips at all, and has almost a 100% knot strngth.
The first thing you do is run the end of the line through the eye of the hook or lure, and double back through the eye.
Loop around the standing part of the line five to six times. more or less than this doesn't work. Thread the tag end back between the eye and the coils. Wet the line and tighten the knot with a steady even motion without stopping.
Trim the tag end to about a 1/4 inch.
The third knot is called a LOOP KNOT. I have been, and so does Rapala, call this a Rapala knot. It should be used on crankbaits and jerkbaits,etc.to increase the action of the lure without using a snap.
First, pass the line through the eye of the lure, then bend it back toward the eye to form a closed loop.
Hold the loop and standing line between your thumb and forefinger, and wrap the end of the line around the standing line and through the loop four or five times.
Then start to tighten the knot by holding the lur while pulling alternately on the standing line and tag end.
Next, slide the knot to the desired position by pulling on the standing line. Cinch the knot in place by pulling hard on the tag end with pliers. Trim the end down to about 1/4 inch.

Estimating Your Trolling Depth General Fishing
Here is the way you estimate your trolling depth. Measure your line to a point from the spot where it enters the water. Then measure the distance from that point down to the water surface. Multiply the second figure by the number of feet of line you have out and divide that number by 12.
For instance:
Lets say your line is 3 inches above the water, 12 inches from the point where it enters the water, and that you have 100 feet of line out.
3 X 100 is 300. 300/12 is 25
Your lure is running approximately 25 feet under the surface

Make an Atracting Bobber Freshwater
A thing that may be of help when fishing dirty to dinghy water with bobbers. Lures or bait will work with this trick. Drill a 1/8 inch hole into the bobber. Put in 3 lead shot or more if they are real small. Not enough to make the bobber sink. Now make sure the bobber is on an area that it will not move. Now you can apply Epoxy to the hole. Use sparingly so that it does not drip into the hole and on the shot. If you have to apply it when it starts to harden then do it that way. Some epoxies are real thick and won't sink in the hole. Now after it has dried and the hole is as good as new your ready for action. This bobber can be twitched every once and a while to make your prey come to your bait or lure. It even gives you better casting distance.
