327. HANDLING A BASS BY A LIP....  Bass Fishing
Right after you reel in a bass, feel free to handle it by its lip and it calms down. then do whatever you have to do...just remember use the right materials.
328. Live well fish health  Boating
I always add a bottle of frozen water into my live wells during summer months. keep those hogs healthy!

329. Getting the most out of used plastics  General Fishing
If your like me, After a fishing trip you have a lot of used plastics. The majority of them are tore to pieces but some just have "hook holes". I have a big ziplock bag that I keep all my used plastics in. When I get home (or find time) I take each one and inspect it to see if I can use it again. If it is useable (not alot of damage) I will take my soldering Iron Pen tip and get it just hot enough to melt the plastic. That way it seals all the holes in the plastics. When I use all of the product in one bag, I will put Like colored baits in the same bag so they wont bleed different colors. The funny thing is, is when the color do bleed, they make some interesting shades

330. Deep Sea fishing tip  Saltwater
Next time anybody goes out deep sea fishing do this it works. Take a coke can and cut a strip out about 1/2 in wide and 4 inches long pop a hole in it and have the deckhands slip it on your line and then tie your hook. You guessed it a spinner but when you are a few miles out this works. My dad and I were selling these on the boat for a 1.00 because nobody could figure out what they were.....lol. But we caught more fish than anyone so next time you go take this tip and bring the Icy Hot b/c you will need it that night.

331. Senko type worm fishing tip  Bass Fishing
Take any size senko and Texas rig it but with NO WEIGHT....then, take a nail weigth and either slip it inside the tail of the bait or....enter on a side of the bait where the bottom bend of the hook is at and thread it in up to the head of the bait until there is no nail weight visual...

How do you know......you know if its working/falling correct if the bait is falling horizontaly...if not tune it until it does...this is the only way besides weightless that i catch fish on a senko with

332. tip with spinner-baits  General Fishing
add a red trailor hook to your spinning-baits, and eliminate those short strikes! the red hook gives it a "bleeding" look.

333. Make your own fishing hotspots!  General Fishing
If you own a privite pond, or know a place where they won't mind, try this out. Get 2 milk crates and wire tie them togther. Throw them into an area with little to no cover, and within 24 hours small fish will start to hide in it. Of course where ever the bait fish are, bass will sure be close. We threw a couple into my friends pond, and they work like magic. It kinda stinks, that you have to put plastic in the water, but it doesn't seem to effect anything. tight lines!

LBF Member: mattc1896
334. For better, stronger knots  Freshwater
Put a little salivia on your knot before yanking it tight. It might taste kinda funky, but it will make it tighter.

LBF Member: mattc1896
335. Pickerel fishing  Freshwater
Using a red and white spoon, such as a Red Devil, when fishing for pickerel is a fairly successful method. Recently, when using a spoon smaller than you usually would, you can increase the number of bites you get and still hook the fish.

336. easy way to get bottomfeeders  General Fishing
Try to find those small crabs in tidepools or along the beach and hook them. Dont cast it out or the crab may become loose so just unwind it slowly to where it is 1 inch over the bottom and jiggle it. When you catch one, stab it with a knife and cut it in half.(Bottom feeders love fresh meat) Throw it in the water and watch as they become attracted to the meat, then they see your lure! Cut every three fish you get. (Note:do this on a dock)
337. catfish quick bait.  Freshwater
if you have shrimp that's gone bad put any kind of scent on it put it on a hook and cast out but no floater catfish are more active at the bottom
338. home made stringers  General Fishing
The stringer itself is that plastic-coated wire rope that you can get at any hardware store...make it any length that suits you. On one end I swage a short length of 1/4" brake line that has a nail with the head cut off swaged in the other end. At the other end, the cable passes through a hole I've drilled in a 1.5" pvc cap, and is then doubled and clamped. The fish don't tangle too badly on this rig, and are easy to remove.

339. cheap bullet weight stoppers  Bass Fishing
When rigging any kind of soft plastic on a Texas rig, put a toothpick in the bottom of the bullet weight, slide in, and break off the pick. This is called "picking" and it stops your weight from sliding up your line. Good especially for flipping around cover.

LBF Member: angrymexican
340. save your plastic worms  Bass Fishing
If you like fishing plastic worms you know that if the fish are biting you can easily go through a whole bag of worms in a few short hours. Most of the time if you don't lose the worm, the head will be all ripped up from catching all those fish. To save a lot of money on jig and spinnerbait trailers, pinch off the bad part of the worm and use the rest as trailers!!! The color combinations are endless and you have many different size and style options

LBF Member: angrymexican
341. crappie fishing  Freshwater
If you're fishing from a boat, fish deep trees, if you can find them. Drop a small jig tipped with a crappie bite into the tree & just let it stay motionless as long as possible. If that doesn't get a strike in a minute & a half to 2 minutes, try a very, very slow up & down movement for a minute or 2. If the fish are there, they will not be able to resist. Use a brightly coored jig, maybe with some orange or yellow or green, even pink. Be prepared though, big cats hang out in these trees sometimes .

342. soft bait repairs  Bass Fishing
after you're done using plastic baits... take out a lighter/match or anything that gets hot and melt the nose, body or any place you put your hook so that it melts back into place and your bait will be almost as good as new!!

344. How to build a jugline  Freshwater
How to build a jugline Juglining use tarred nylon #150 test for jugs. It isn't effected by the water and lasts longer than plain nylon. DON'T USE BRAIDED NYLON ON JUGS OR TROTLINES, THE MAINLINE OR THE DROPS, BECAUSE THE FISH BREAK IT A LOT EASIER FOR SOME REASON. Dropper Loop This is similar to the weights used when jugline fishing. These are made from using some kind of cup like a 32 oz styrofoam cup as a mold and concrete mix with some kind of wire for the eyes. bend the two ends of the wire or make a loop and stick the wire down in the cup and hold it up with your fingers then pour the desired amount of mix in the cup. You'll need a bag of concrete mix and a bag of concrete ... mix equal parts of the mix and the pure concrete so that it'll have more concrete powder than the normal mix alone so that it won't break down in the water. use just enough water to make it easy to manage. once they're hardened (2 days) take them out of the cup and let them cure a few days at least ... once you let them harden for about 4 or 5 days coat them with some kind of sealer you have available. thompsons works but found that oil based porch paint works better. It's made for sealing concrete. three hooks work best ... if you use 5 it'll get tangled pretty badly and not worth the trouble. also use those float noodles now for the jugs ... can make 3 floats outta one noodle from the toys section in Wal-Mart and they're $1.96 each. Juglining There are also a lot of other cool things you can do with these jugs, like for night fishing you can use chem-lites taped to the tops of them Take a 1 litre clear plastic pop bottle and paint it white with regular ole canned spray paint and put the chem-lite in the bottle then tape that to the top of the noodle ... you can see it over 300 yds like that and when you get a hit on the jugline it will stand up and shine like a beacon on a cold dark night

345. bass baits  Bass Fishing
use 11" scalloped broadtails (Zetabait I think they are) and have had real good luck with them especially in black and pumkinseed colors so anything along those lines may get you something. Using a bluegill/redear/bream is pretty good too for big bass. Something else that works pretty good is a Johnson Silver Minnow. Sometimes if they don't hit it you can add a piece of porkskin and that'll do the trick. And I'd go with the Rapalas, too... the FatRap the ShadRap are both usually pretty good producers. Lot's of things a guy could recommend and use for sure. But sometimes all it takes is just changing colors... or changing up your retrieve (if you're using artificials) which could mean a little faster/slower or stop/twitch/go... sometimes all it takes is running that same very thing over a fish that's ignored ya for a few casts... from a different direction... sometimes you've just gotta make em territorially mad and they'll hit hard and fast. Experiment and have fun!

346. trout fishing  Freshwater
If you go after hatchery-raised or farm-raised trout like I do, then you might consider getting Powerbait and nightcrawlers. Ask the locals about leader length; this is important because you want your bait at the same depth as the fish. As for hooks, I've had my best results with the Renegade(tm) brand hooks that I've purchased from Wal Mart. I use the #6 black octopus hooks. If I'm using Powerbait(tm) eggs only, I'll thread two so that the hook goes through dead center, leaving point and barb exposed. For Powerbait(tm) plus Powerbait(tm) egg, I'll thread egg on first and then cover hook with Powerbait(tm) , tapering the bait after I've finished. I'll use one or two Powerbait(tm) eggs as a float and then thread either one small nightcrawler or half of a large one, if fishing with worms.

347. hawg bass  Bass Fishing
If you are after the hawgs you gotta fish an artificial worm or a jig and pig. Those are the consistent big fish producers. I fish 6-10 inch worms. Dont be fooled. I've caught many bass under a pound on a 10" worm. I use the Texas and Carolina rigs with a 5/0 wide gap Gamakatsu worm hook. Two reasons. They hook better and you'll rarely have a gut hook. You dont need every color under the rainbow either. Start off with the tried and true purple worm or purple firetail. Get an earth tone like a pumpkinseed and something red/charltreuse like the tomato worm. You are already well on your way. In the early mornings or late evenings try a floating worm. It really dont matter which one if the fish are biting but loud colors like methiolate, bubblegum, and yellow seem to produce well for me.

348. Slow fish a Bass Stopper  Bass Fishing
Fishing in local tournaments, I have found that a slow approach with a K&E bass stopper produces more fish. You may have to sort through some small ones to get to the winners but it will produce. I rig the K&E different ways to get a different presentation each time. Texas style, with a very small split shot, with only a snap swivel and even tied directly to the line. K&E come with leader already attached so I use a lighter line for easier casts. Purple and Pumpkin seed are my favorites

349. bass fishing in ponds  Bass Fishing
If there are 6-7 lb bass in a pond, and you want to weed out the small ones, use a Culprit worm T-rigged on a 2/0 or 3/0 hook. Another pond killer is a Senko-type bait. (Also known as a stick bait) T-rig or Wacky rig these, fish them weightless, and go slow. Another killer is a 6" Zoom Finesse Worm in a brown color. T-rig it, throw it weightless, and hang on!

350. bass fishing at night  Bass Fishing
If you can fish at night, use a black buzzbait or Jitterbug on top and work them as slow and steady as you can.

351. bass tip  Bass Fishing
if you want to catch the really big bass in lakes use live bait like little bluegills or baby bass on a 3/0 hook works for me everytime!!

352. the best way to fish with a fish head for big catfish  Freshwater
take a large shad or bait fish (bule gillcut ect.) we always descale them. cut the gut pocket from just behind the head and down at a angle to the tail or to the end of the gut. cut the filllets off both sides. leave the tail on the last side. note cut the sime all the way down the the last fillet about in the midde. this will give the tail tip a little more play to kick in the water like the fish is still a live when u use the fillet. now with the head cut the rst of the spine off. u should have a head with the gut pocket. hook the gut pocket and fold it back on the head and press the hook into the head. try not to go into the gill u bait may not stay on when u cast it hard. this works well.
353. tubes  Bass Fishing
when your spot fishing bass and they are not being aggressive rig up a tube i like to use a motor oil color with red flakes and cast it on the bottom then just flick the rod tip a bunch, with slack in the line. do this for a while and reel it in every 15 seconds they will bite

LBF Member: chris bass
354. tubes  Bass Fishing
when the bass are chasing the shad in the morning and you see the boils rig up a white tubes with a 1/4 ounce tube weight in it and cast past the boil and with your rod tip down rip through the bass and your almost gauranteed a bite

LBF Member: chris bass
355. stripers  Bass Fishing
my last trip i was throwing everything i could thing of but the stripers were not bitting. i kept seeing the shad in the area coming to the surface looking for food so i got a good look at the color and size. i thought to myself "match the hatch" so i through a clear/silver swim bait within two hours a pulled in 6 stripers so next time just remember from the start match the hatch and all will go well

LBF Member: chris bass
356. tube fishing under docks  Bass Fishing
get a fat head tub rig up a 1/4 ounce weight on it and skip it under the dock bass love to hang out in these structures. keep your finger on the line to feel a bite because most of your strikes will come when the tube is spiralling down

LBF Member: chris bass
357. catfish bait  Freshwater

361. Wild Jigs  General Fishing
take your favorite jig and start hooking up all sorts of things for trailers get wild with it you never know what the bass with hit sometimes

LBF Member: chris bass
362. Tube Colors  Bass Fishing
i love useing tubes all differnt colors all differnt ways but what works best for me is a lighter green color with red flakes and to let it rest on the bottom of a rocky flat and just pop it along the bottom
363. Tube Cast  Bass Fishing
when you see shad boiling off the top you know bass are around rig up a 4" tube cast it past the school and do quick jerks with your rod tip down the bass will nail it before you know

LBF Member: chris bass
364. walking the dog  General Fishing
having trouble getting your spook to "walk the dog" just right. if you have access to a pool or next time on the lake and have some trial time cast it out and give it a tug once with the line tight and the second tug with the slack still in the line then reel in the excess try that technique and next thing you know you'll be "walking the dog"

LBF Member: chris bass
365. summer bass fish  Bass Fishing
in the midst of summer the hotter it gets the deeper the fish will head from what ive learned over the years is that a drop shot rig with a walking worm about 25 feet down produces catches for me.
366. Catch Catfish  Freshwater
Once you catch a a small fish or any other fish you take the guts out and use the guts as bait this is a great way to catch large catfish.
367. CHUMMING FOR MULLET AND BAITFISH  Saltwater
IF YOU LIKE TO NET MULLET YOU CAN USE OATMEAL TO CHUM THE WATER. JUST TAKE A FEW BIG HANDFULLS AND TOSS IT WITH IN THE RANGE OF YOUR NET. IF THERE ARE ANY MULLET NEAR BY, YOU WILL SEE THEM SCHOOL AROUNG YOUR OAT MEAL. OR IF YOU HATE HOLDING THAT HEAVY NET AND WAITING YOU CAN ALSO TRY BAITING SMALL HOOK FLOATING RIGS WITH OATMEAL> TOSS THE RIG IN FIRST, THEN A HANDFULL OF OATMEAL. SIT BACK CRACK OPEN A BREW AND SOON YOU'LL BE HAVING SMOKED MULLET FOR SUPPER. BAIT FISH- I FOUND THAT ORDINARY CAT FOOD WORKS GREAT FOR PIN FISH. YOU CAN ALSO USE A CAN OF JACK MACK IF YOU LIKE BUT THE CAT FOOD WORKS JUST AS WELL AND ITS CHEAPER. GET THE STUFF THAT IS SOFT AND MUSHY, NOT THE CHUNKS WITH GRAVY. THROW A HANDFULL INTO A GRASSY AREA AND GET READY WITH YOUR NET.

368. bottom baits  Saltwater
bottom feeders can't resist these powersbaits sandworms, squid, sand eel, clams and other shellfish

369. double up  Bass Fishing
I like to tie a short 6 to 8 in. piece of line to the rear hook of my top water baits like the pop R and the Zara spooks and tie a small jig with a curly tail on it to the leader. Some times when the fish blow up on your topwater and miss it they will see the jig and hit that. This works great for white bass or hybrids. You can catch alot of smaller fish that you would miss on the plug and yet still have a good big fish lure in the water at the same time.

LBF Member: crankbait4me
370. hook up  Bass Fishing
If you are having a hard time getting Mr. largemouth to stay on your crankbaits until you can get your hands on him. Change the rear hook to the next largest size premium hook like the counter rotating hooks. It will make them stay on the hook until you can shake hands with him and introduce yourself proper.

LBF Member: crankbait4me
371. picky bass  Bass Fishing
Some days it just seems harder to get old mr largemouth to bite. I replace the rear hook on my crankbaits sometimes with the white feathered teaser hooks sold in tackle stores. Sometimes its the difference between going home grinnin or cryin.

LBF Member: crankbait 4me
372. more depth please  Bass Fishing
If you have a favorite wooden crankbait but you wish it could run deeper then drill a 3/8 in deep hole with a 3/8 in bit just below the diving bill and in front of the front hook. Place oo buck shot or small lead spit shot in the hole and seal it up with epoxy. Now your crankbait will dive deeper and not loose any action because of it.

LBF Member: crankbait 4me
373. sponge fishin  Bass Fishing
If you like scent on your baits but get tired of constantly replacing the stuff because it washes off try this for crankbaits. Cut a piece of sponge about the size of a dime for large baits and smaller for the little baits and place it on the middle or front treble hook. The scent will stay better on the sponge than it will on hard plastic or wooden lures so you don't have to replenish as often. Once the sponge gets wet squeeze it out well before reapplying the scent so the sponge will hold more scent in it. catch a big one for me!!

the best time of the year for catfish is right after the ice melts on your favorite fishing lake. the catfish are in a feeding frenzy and bite excellent off of cut shad sides casted against the wind.

377. BLUE GILL  Freshwater
I have caught some of my biggest bass by first catching about 4 blue gill and putting them in a minnow buckett. Then dropping them about 4 ft. down from a pier I have caught big bass by doing this.

378. How to Catch alot of Night Crawlers  General Fishing
When looking for night crawlers most go out at night but it is best to go early morning after a light rain. In the early morning after a rain night crawlers stray from their burrows so you can just pick them right up. also after a rain you can look in the gutters of streets and on sidewalks.
379. Carry your rods with ease  General Fishing
If you find yourself walking through the woods, or high brush to your fishing spot with your rod(s), hold the rod(s) backwards so they follow you. You will make it through the brushes and limbs much quicker and with less chances of getting snagged.

380. New Trout  Freshwater
Not having any luck catching those elusive trout on sunny days. Try a red worm hooked with an inline spinner...drives em crazy.

381. plumb the depth  Freshwater
Always remember to plumb the depth. It is cruiciel that you have the right amount of weight because you will miss good bites.
382. Rod tip damage  General Fishing
Never wind your lure in all the way, hitting your rod tip. This could cause damage to your rod guide or fracture your rod tip.

LBF Member: rickhoffer
383. Strong current river fishing  Freshwater
When fishing in a river with a strong current using a single hook, I found one thing that helps with the hook set and helps prevent snags. If the current is traveling from left to right, hold the jig in your hand so the hook is up and the tip is pointing towards you. Gently bend the hook to the left about 10 to 15 degrees. If the river is traveling from right to left, bend the hook to the right. When you cast upstream your jig will travel in a large semi-circle while retrieving. As the jig passes by the fish, and the fish reacts to follow your hook will be in the best position. As the jig head hits a rock or the bottom it will be less likely to get snagged as the tip of the hook will be facing away from the direction of travel.

384. Float Tube isn't just for trout  Freshwater
Float tubing for bass is awesome. Not only is the whole process quick and painless, but you can get to places that you really can't get to in a boat, and much more quietly. The result is more and bigger fish, and an increased appreciation for the outdoors. It's a much more hands-on experience, and you can get a really nice tube for about $130. I highly recommend that you try it - I promise you'll have a great time.

385. Add a floor to your Jon boat  Boating
Adding a floor to your Jon boat is beneficial in a couple ways. One, it quiets your ride on the water Two, you now have a much more stable platform to stand on For the floor, I recommend cutting out two sections for the floor and not securing the flooring down for the reason of cleaning underneath. If you measure properly and your carpet is tight, then when you place your new flooring in your boat, the new floor will be very stable and will not move. - Start by measuring your floor between the front and your bow or where you want the floor to stop. Always cut the wood flooring a little big, it is easier to trim than purchase new wood if you cut it too small. - Once your measurements are correct your ready to fit, cut and apply the outdoor carpet. - Lay the carpet face down, and lay your board on top. Using a straight edge and a magic marker, outline your board giving plenty of space so the carpet will wrap around the sides of the board about six inches or more. Cut away the access. - Next you will cut the carpet on the corners to wrap them around the wood. Instead of cutting the carpet ends at a straight angle, cut the carpet ends so they fold together in a 45 degree angle. This will ensure the carpet ends on the bottom of the board meet up flush. - Before securing the carpet to the board, test your sides to ensure you have a snug fit. Then apply the marine grade glue to the carpet under the board. While you sit on the board, apply marine grade glue where the carpet side will meet the wood. I recommend doing one side at a time. Have a friend pull the side of the carpet tight and fold over onto the board. While you are sitting on the board, start to nail down the sides with small outdoor nails. Use large heads to hold the carpet down. I would recommend purchasing stainless steel nails; they cost a little more but will not rust. Do the same for all four sides of the board. - Do the same process for the area between the back and front seat. By not securing the new flooring down to your Jon boat, you can remove to clean underneath. I did this to my 11 foot Coleman Jon boat and it made the boat much more stable for standing. The flooring did not weigh the boat down much. I did not see an change in my boats waterline. When transporting your boat, simply take out the flooring and put them in once you reach the lake.

386. Unplug before you launch.  Boating
Tired of your trailer lights and brakes screwing up on the way home, after a day on the water? Try this trick, unplug the trailer before you launch, this will prevent electrical current passing through wiring while trailer is submerged. Saving bulbs and brake components.

387. Running Catfish  Freshwater
If you like to let the Catfish run with your bait before setting the hook. Here is an idea my father taught me. Take a piece of Styrofoam from a coffee cup; break it halfway so there is a slit in the Styrofoam. At the end of your pole, wedge your line in the Styrofoam. Now when you see the Styrofoam moving towards the water you can set the hook.

LBF Member: rickhoffer
388. Cheap fish buzzer  Freshwater
Fishing for big Catfish is a lot of fun, sometimes at a pay lake you will wait for a while before getting a bite. If you use the old fashion metal stakes that hold your fishing pole. Stop by your local Wal-Mart, in the bicycle section you will find these small battery powered horns. Attach one to your pole holder; lay it across the open area where your pole would lay on the horn button. Now you can relax a little more, but when that buzzer goes off you have one on, so don’t be too far away or your pole may be gone.

389. Clean cork  General Fishing
The best thing I have found to clean the cork on your rods are those disinfectant wet wipes. Just keep scrubbing firmly and you will be surprised how clean you can get your cork. Wipe down your rods too, your old rods will look new again, and the wipes wont damage the rod finish : )

390. Braid for Hydrilla  Freshwater
Use braided line when fishing thick hydrilla. Not only can you get a lot heavier pound test (30-60 pounds) but you will find that the braided spectra line actually cuts through the hydrilla. Monofilament line will just collect the strands of hydrilla until you end up with a balled up wad of grass on your lure. If a fish runs under the mat with monofilament, you may not have enough line strength to pull the fish and the grass up. With braided line, the hydrilla doesn't ball up as bad and you have the full strength of the line to fight the fish. The other advantage of braid is the extra sensitivity since it has virtually no stretch. Some people prefer smoother "stealth" braids so it doesn't make as much noise when it cuts the grass. I haven't seen that big of a difference yet.
