521. Windy day texas riggin'  Freshwater
When fishing a texas rig in heavy wind or current, try pegging your weight and using flourocarbon line. Flourocarbon sinks, where mono floats. This will decrease drag on your line letting it get to the bottom quicker. The pegged weight will help you keep better contact with the bait once it's on the bottom!

522. Clear water buzzin'  Freshwater
In clear water, remove the skirt from a small 1/8 oz. buzzbait and add a small grub to the hook instead, this makes for a more subtle presentation!

523. Discounts at tackle stores  General Fishing
Most tackle stores respect and support our country's military. Although it might not be posted, always ask if they give discounts for active military personnel. You'd be suprised how many will give you a discount.

524. Fishing city lakes in California  General Fishing
I've found that in California, especially in city lakes, people generally don't have the respect for their surrounding that you see in other places. Me and my daughter always pick up trash in the areas we have fished whether or not we left it there. Keep the lakes and rivers clean for the wildlife that inhabit it and for future generations.

525. Carolina keeper  General Fishing
Try using Carolina keepers instead of split shots on your line. They are easily adjustable to different lengths and they won't crimp your line.

526. Cheap fishing gear  General Fishing
I cruise around garage and estate sales often looking for a great deal. Many trift store will have fishing gear too. A lot of different manufacturers will refurbish used gear for free or at a cheap rate. Vintage fishing lures resale very high on ebay too. You might turn a buck or two.

527. Curing chicken livers for catfish  Freshwater
To ensure tougher chicken livers for catfish bait, I have found the following technique quite useful. Spread chicken livers out on a cookie sheet. Generously cover livers in iodized salt and garlic powder. Leave in the sun approx 2 hrs. Flip livers and repeat. Store livers in any container and refrigerate until ready to use.

528. Need worms?  General Fishing
I take a charged car battery and connect the + and - posts to a couple of tent stake spaced about 3 feet apart from each other in the ground. The electrical current causes the worms to surface. Do not step on the ground while doing this, be of a sidewalk.

529. Use sea gulls for locating gamefish  Saltwater
Anytime you find sea gulls feeding on the water, you know they are feeding on the bait fish that have been driven to the top by the larger game fish below.

530. stuck anchor  Boating
If you find that your anchor is stuck on the bottom, and if all attempts to free it have failed, attach a float to it, and return later when the tides have changed direction. This will oftentimes loosen a trapped anchor.

531. Using circle hooks  Saltwater
If you're in search of higher hookup ratios, try using a circle hook. These hooks, though not very well known, are gaining popularity as word gets around about their benefits. Circle hooks will not only guarantee more landed fish, because of the small gap, and the inverted point, they are also better for the fish since they generally hook in the lip and rarely in the gut.

532. When to fish soft crabs  Saltwater
Remember to fish with a soft crab imitation during the full moon periods. That's the time when the live crabs shed their shells, so look for feeding stripers to move to the shallow areas in search of crabs.

533. Snook fishing  Saltwater
Fish for snook very much like you would for largemouth bass. They like to hang along ledges, and around structure, like posts, rocks etc.

534. Crankbait tip!  Bass Fishing
Add a #2, round bend treble hook onto the back of your crankbaits to help hook fish that just nip at the bait.

LBF Member: yellowchamp206
535. Skinny water bassn'  Bass Fishing
Some bass live shallow year round. In the hot months try throwing a fat bodied, square lipped crankbait in the thickest, shallowest cover you can find.I have caught big bass like this in water as warm as 93 degrees in water less than a foot deep. Try making multiple casts to the cover from different angles to help trigger a strike.

536. How to catch small bait fish  Saltwater
When i fish, i use a umbella net. I drop it down but not to far and i throw small pieces of bread over the umbella net then i pull the net up real fast and i catch at least 5 bait fish.
537. stalking fish  Saltwater
Avoid fishing in clear water unless you see bait fish actively or diving birds. Fishing in clear water spooks the fish too easily. So look for color water, its the best for fishing.

538. freeing jammed ferrules  General Fishing
Cool the ferrule by placing ice cubes on it then grasp the female furrale at the end. hold it for 20 seconds; it will warm and expand before the male section does. so you can easily seperate the two.

539. Keep skirts on spinnerbaits from tangling  General Fishing
Spray the skirts with armor all Protectant then wipe the excess off.

540. Black at night  Bass Fishing
Try using a large black jitterbug preferably w/black skirt at night when the moon is bright. Fish along the banks and especially the docks! I've had great luck with this especially between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. Happy huntin'

541. Overcast  Freshwater
During overcast conditions, bass will become active and hold as close to cover as they normally would. Expand your coverage of the area under these conditions

LBF Member: shillins24
542. Lighted Fishing Areas  Freshwater
Avoid fishing large areas of shallow water where direct sunlight is shining. Fish do not like these areas and prefer darker water and shadows.

543. Fly Fishing For Trout  Fly Fishing
When fly-fishing for trout on hot, bright summer days, use terrestrial patterns such as ants, crickets and grasshoppers

LBF Member: shillins24
544. Jig Fishing  Freshwater
When searching for largemouth, remember that fishing a jig can be extremely effective. Far and away, the most popular colors to use for bigg bass are black and blue.

545. More tips with Bluegill  Freshwater
When using a worm for BlueGill, as most people do, try twisting the worm on the hook, This way, the little panfish will have a harder time stealing the bait and you will hook more fish.

546. Tips with bluegills  Freshwater
Most bluegill fishing involves a #6-8 long shank hook and a 4-8 puond line.(long shanks are better because they are the easiest to take off)

547. Crappie  Freshwater
When fishing for crappie, a great technique is to fish at night under a bright light at a dock.

LBF Member: shillins24
548. Topwater  Freshwater
Use buzzbaits when lake fishing for bass in the warm months. The best times are in the morning.

LBF Member: shillins24
549. Bluegills  Freshwater
If you catch a fish, and the hook has caused the gills to bleed, keep the fish if its legal. The chances of its surviving is slim to none.

550. Bass  Freshwater
When fishing for bass on summer nights, try to use lures with sound-producing effects.

551. Dapping  Fly Fishing
Dapping is the technique of tipping a fly lightly over the surface of the water.

552. River Smallmouth  Freshwater
With the hot water tempertures, most smallmouth will be in fast, rapid like water.

LBF Member: shillins24
553. Weightless worm  Bass Fishing
Try a weightless worm, 2/0 or 3/0 red hook, with a 4-6 inch ribbon or finesse worm. Purple has always worked for me, and so has pumpkin.
554. Blood treble hooks  Freshwater
Replace ordinary gray treble hooks with red when fishing for most freshwater species, but especially for walleye. The red hooks resemble blood, and therefore is percieved by the fish as wounded prey.

LBF Member: ned93ved
555. Catfish  Freshwater
When fishing for catfish in the summer months, dawn and dusk are productive, but, without a doubt, the fish bite best at night.

LBF Member: shillins24
556. Fishing line  Freshwater
If you haven't fished with power pro line yet, I highly recommend that you try it.

LBF Member: shillins24
557. Spawning bass  Freshwater
when bass move into their spawning beds, lures representing lizards and crawdads are move effective than jigs and spinnerbaits.

LBF Member: shillins24
558. Salmon  Freshwater
One of the best techniques for catching kokanee is to troll a wedding ring lure tipped with a piece of white corn.

LBF Member: shillins24
559. Stripers  Freshwater
When hunting for freshwater stripers using topwater lures, remember that these baits are most effective in low-light periods early and late in the day.

LBF Member: shillins24
560. Reel Maintance  Freshwater
After buying a new reel, lubricate it to make sure no parts were missed at the factory. Lube it every six months or at the end of the season before storing

LBF Member: shillins24
561. Kayaks  General Fishing
For the people that do a lot of wade fishing, and cannot afford a 20,000 boat. I highly recommend that you look into buying a kayak. They are great, I brought one last year and it has been the best investment I had made in fishing.

LBF Member: shillins24
562. Smallmouth Bass  Freshwater
When fishing for smallmouth, try throwing a white fluke or a case sss with a 2/0 hook. It is one of the best baits I have ever used.
563. Topwater Frogs  Bass Fishing
Along the tournament trails topwater frogs have the nick name of bun hookers from time to time.So try this to enhance your catchs.Try adding 1" curly tail grubs to the frogs hooks for extra enhancement. The grubs add more action than the legs alone. Also one may bend their frog hooks slightly outwards for better hooking power. To add a little sound to your frog add a couple of bb's through a small hole and then glue the hole shut with a soft plastic glue type.

564. Buzzbaits-When to use them  Freshwater
Buzzbaits work best in water temps between 65 and 90 degrees. They seldom work in water temps below 50 degrees! Under and around boat docks, rock piles, boulders, over and around shallow cover.

565. Caring for Soft Jerkbaits  General Fishing
Lay soft jerkbaits into a tackle box with long trays and be sure they are perfectly straight..If they are stored with a bend ,you won't be able to straighten them out and they will not run true.

LBF Member: kip59
566. Photographing your catch  General Fishing
Before releasing your catch for another to enjoy. Always photograph your catch from the side. Never head on. Side photographs enhance the size, and length of your true fishs identity and enhances the photograph 100%

567. Weight Free Wacky Worm  Freshwater
When fishing a senko etc.wacky style try adding a split ring to the worm where you hook the worm in the middle, then add your hook to the rig.Gives you just enough weight to keep your worm weedless and gives your wacky rigged worm more action.

568. crayfish crankbait  Bass Fishing
Floating crayfish crankbaits produce well on rocky points, dams, and shores. Crank it until you hit bottom and pause. This resembles a crawdad it it’s natural, defensive position.

LBF Member: kidrock
569. change stradegy  Bass Fishing
Don’t get locked into using a particular lure and presentation method just because it worked the last time you went bass fishing. Because the environment in which bass live is constantly changing, you also must change your strategy to match the current conditions in order to increase your success.

LBF Member: kidrock
570. windy days  Bass Fishing
Fish the down-wind side of a lake or pond in sustained, heavy wind. In this situation forage will be concentrated on that side of the lake or pond and bass will move in to feed. A spinnerbait is a good choice when fishing for these aggressive fish.

LBF Member: kidrock
571. Key to High Pressure  Bass Fishing
When fishing on high-pressure days, fish deeper water. Bass are often suspended right off the bottom because the barometric pressure has decreased the amount of air in their air sack. This causes them to move into deeper water because they have to exert more effort to hold in shallow water.

LBF Member: kidrock
572. Pork no jig  Bass Fishing
A pork frog or pork crawfish can be fished without a jig by using a keeper hook. Press the pig onto the hook. Take an old plastic worm that is no longer useable. Break off a piece of the worm and push it onto the keeper. Then measure the distance past the barb on the hook and break the remainder of the worm off. Now push that end of the worm onto the point of the hook, past the barb. You now have a weedless pig. If more weight is desired, use a slip sinker and a bead at the knot. This bait is ideal in heavy cover because it is more weedless than a traditional Jig & Pig.

LBF Member: kidrock
573. cold water bass  Freshwater
When the tempurature is low, try a blue black jig and work it as slow as you can.

LBF Member: kidrock
574. early channel cats  Freshwater
In early season use cut herring and shad for channel cats. They are feeding on winter kill at the time o these baits work best.

LBF Member: kidrock
575. weedless fishing  General Fishing
When fishing brush or vegetation, you are most likely to get strikes when the bait is fished weedless. Fishing the bait weedless allows you to work the bait in the cover where the bass are without getting hung up. The most weedless baits are soft plastics, like worms, lizards, craws and jigs rigged with the hook point stuck back into the plastic body. The point is not exposed so it won't snag on the cover. To rig this bait, I use a High Performance Hook. I insert the hook in the center of the head of the bait, come out about a quarter of an inch down, and slide the plastic all the way around the hook until it covers the eye, (be sure the clip is open). Then hold the line and see how the bait hangs straight, and observe how the hook would be placed in the bait to keep that natural look. The punch the hook tip through the bait at a spot where it would go through to keep it straight. Go straight through the bait and out through the other side. This will leave the hook point and barb exposed on the top of the bait. Then pinch the bait by the hook point, slide it forward towards the eye, and then insert the hook point into the plastic. Slide the plastic back until the tip of the hook is covered. When this is done properly, the bait will be straight. Directions and diagrams for this weedless rigging can be found on the High Performance Hook packaging.

576. sensitivity  General Fishing
Sensitivity is always the key to catching fish. It is important to be able to feel your bait and feel a strike. Gaining more sensitivity can be as simple as changing your grip of the rod. Move your grip to a position that allows you to have direct line contact. With a baitcaster, this can be accomplished by palming the reel or holding the rod just above the reel and touching your index finger to the line. Another advantage of this grip is that it helps balance the rod weight in your hand and reduces fatigue. With spinning or bait casting tackle, relaxing your grip allows the rod to transmit vibrations from the bait or fish. This will greatly increase the sensitivity. But be sure you have a secure enough grip so that you don't lose the rod and reel to the fish.

LBF Member: lil smoove
577. summer fish  Saltwater
If you are using lures, try a slower retrieve. Summertime fish are not as willing to chase baits. Reds should be in shallow water early, and later in the day, redfish should move to the edges of flats, where deeper cooler water is near.

LBF Member: lil smoove
578. summer fishing  Saltwater
When the water temperatures rise, as they do in the summer months, concentrate on deep water for trout in depths ranging from 4 to 6 feet. Free lined piggy perch or croaker should produce the best results.

LBF Member: lil smoove
579. night fishing  Saltwater
July is a great month for night fishing because you have 2 full moons and this way you can beat the heat of the hot sun during the day

LBF Member: lil smoove
580. stalking fish  Saltwater
Avoid fishing in clear water unless you see bait fish activity or diving birds. Fishing in clear water spooks the fish too easily so look for off color water for the best fishing.

LBF Member: lil smoove
581. Birds Hovering  Saltwater
When you see seagulls hovering over the water, this means there are normally fish in that area. In order not to scare the fish, do not use your big motor when you get near the seagulls. Instead set up a drift or work your trolling motor as you get near or next to the seagulls in order not to scare the fish...

LBF Member: lil smoove
582. handling fish  General Fishing
Also, wet your hands before handling the fish so when you are taking the hook out, your hands will not damage the protective coating of slime on the fish.

LBF Member: lil smoove
583. using shrimp  Saltwater
When using live shrimp for bait, try using larger than normal hooks such as #3 Treble or #3 Wide Gap. By using the larger hooks, the undersized fish that are released will have a much better chance of survival.

LBF Member: lil smoove
584. Sewing thread for chicken liver  Freshwater
Take some sewing thread from your favorite person, cause I wouldn't be caught dead in that part of WalMart! Before grabbing that wad of chicken liver, break off a piece of thread about 2' long. Get that liver on your hook, and (starting at your hook eye), wrap thread not too tightly around liver. Liver will stay on hook just a little long, and almost needs to be eaten, and not picked at by fish.

585. Fun bass fishing  Bass Fishing
For a lot of fun, i use top water lures, or lures I never would have thought to rig up. I figure if people made the lure...it has to work. Even if you dont get an immediate strike, just be persistant, thats part of fishing, and its fun to see new stuff working well.
