Fishing InformationIn January 1997, I spent a night on a panga in Mexican waters, drop line fishing for giant squid at a depth of 300 feet. There were four of us and we brought up over 300 lbs. of the critters. These monsters are huge, and hard to pull up from that depth, by hand. At the surface they spray water, and in the boat they squirt ink and flash incredible, undulating patterns of shapes and colors across their mantle. It was my most challenging, interesting and satisfying fishing adventure to date. Personal BackgroundNine year ago we moved five hours South of Tucson, to the Bay of Guaymas on the Sea of Cortez. I spend ten days a month, on average, fishing for Dorado, Yellowtail, Skipjack, Wahoo, Roosterfish, Spanish Makerel and tuna. I carry light to medium-heavy tackle. From casting reels with 6 or 8 lbs. mono on light rods, to Penn rods and Senator 4/0 reels with 30lbs. test. I troll feathers and Rapalas, fish with jigs, cut bait on drop lines, or slow-troll/drift with live bait that I catch myself. Boat Information"Flying Fish" is a 23 foot Sunbird, 1996, walk around with a 200hp Johnson outboard on an extended transom. She sleeps two. Bait tank, live well, saltwater washdown, radio, depth finder, GPS. Capacity for 125 gals. gasoline, I can make it across the Sea of Cortez to Baja California in under four hours.
