This is a nice day trip for some shallow draft boating such as canoe or john boats. Of course you can launch a larger boat, but the terrain is more restricted - still worth it though, if you intend to fish.

Your best bet is to launch at "Sun Set Park" in down town Rocky Mount. They have a well maintained paved ramp, but no other facilities. Good drift fishing if you go a few miles up river and then come back. A lot of rocky out crops and eddies to get into. Just south of the ramp there is a decent sized island with lots of cyprys and some really good pan fishing. Stay away from the bridge though! It is close to the dam and waterfall.

There is a second ramp located nearby at the 'Battle Park' - really part of the same park system. I'd stay away from that area, not as much to offer.
