The Chemung river that runs through Corning,NY and Elmira,NY has excellent hybrid striped bass fishing. The fish have been thriving there for about 7 years now. I fly fish for them with a 10 foot 9/10wt rod with matching reel. I use a shad pattern fly that is 2-3 inches in lenth. The stripers are very agressive when feeding and hit extremely hard and once hooked they make very long runs and will put your equipment to the test. I have seen 5lb stripers snap 20lb test line like thread because the drag wasn't set correctly. Most of the bass I catch average 6-8 pounds with some monsters tipping the scale at more than 10lbs. I have enclosed a picture of a striper I caught in 2004 which was 14.5lbs. At the time I didn't realize the fish would have been the new NYS record. I later found out the NYS record was 11 pounds 2 ounces. I was informed by a fellow fisherman who attended Mansfield University. He said that they helped develop a diploid strain of hybrid striper which will spawn and reproduce. This is the type of hybrids that are in the Chemung river. They are a very spooky fish and will sound just like stripers in the ocean. If you wade in the river chances are you will spook them. Once they are spooked, don't plan on catching them for several hours until they settle back down. They also will school up and chase bait fish. If you see bait fish leaping for their life out of the water, its a pretty good bet stripers are feeding. If so, grab your rod and hang on! These are an excellent game fish to go after.
