I've fished across Maine, been to Schoodic Lake several times since the late 1970's. While management of the fishery has certainly improved during the 1990's, the lake's best fishing days are still long gone. The salmon population has all but disappeared. The brook trout population has suffered a severe decline over the last several years, 2002 was the worst squaretail year in recent memory. Three to four years ago, the fishing for lake trout was very good, but the lake is severely overfished now and the population has suffered. Even the smallmouth bass population has declined, after producing excellent results for several years during the late 1990's. Given the more proactive management of nearby lakes like Sebec and Moosehead, these lakes will continue to far outperform Schoodic as a fishery. Even Millinocket Lake to the north is a better bet than Schoodic. Schoodic suffers from absentee management and severe overfishing; fish and game officers rarely if ever visit the lake and it seems that the state has lost interest in managing this fishery. The lake is quickly returning to the malaise of the 1980's, when one could go an entire season without landing even one member of the trout or salmon species (according to conversations I've had with local folks). While part of the lake's charm, its remote location combined with the decline in quality fishing and the lack of local resources for visitors make the other aforementioned lakes a much better bet for an enjoyable and productive outing. If you are going to travel to this region, better and more abundant opportunities exist elsewhere. The lake is still an opportunity for the state to create a top notch fishery, but it must refocus its efforts to stem the current decline.
