Spring offers many choices for fun and exciting warm weather angling on Northern California and Southern Oregon rivers.
On the upper Sacramento River, spring is one of the year's best times for trophy trout fishing. Whether you are spin fishing or fly fishing, this is a very special catch & release fishery. These rainbows average 1 1/2 - 3 pounds, with 4 - 6 pounders caught regularly and true trophies up to 10 pounds hooked every season. Good days can produce from 10 to over 30 fish per angler. Spring is also the season for the lower Sacramento's annual striped bass migration. We fish in the Colusa area, right in the heart of the striper's prime spawning grounds. The limit is two fish per angler and catch & release is ok till your arms ache. Typical stripers run from 4 - 15 pounds, with monsters ranging anywhere from 20 to over 50 pounds. This is tons of fun on light tackle. Drifting minnows, casting lures, trolling, bait fishing and fly fishing are all effective techniques. May and June are the Sacramento and Feather rivers' peak months for shad fishing. The American shad is referred to as "the poor man's tarpon". They will readily hit small, flashy flies and jigs. They usually range from 2 - 6 pounds and will more than test ultra-lite tackle.
During April, May and June, salmon fishermen can target spring run Chinook salmon on the Klamath, Feather and Rogue rivers. Springers average 12 - 15 pounds and lunkers can top the 40-pound mark. They are incredible fighters and are considered to be one of the best tasting salmon available. Back-trolling spinners, anchovies, roe and KwikFish are the preferred techniques.
For anglers wanting to catch steelhead, there's good early spring fishing to be had on CA's American and OR's upper Rogue rivers. These steelies can run from 2 - 12 pounds. Depending on the bite, side-drifting bait, back trolling plugs and fly fishing can all be effective.
