Rancho Los Coches has a rich history going back to 1843 when the San Diego Mission granted the land to preserve the ranch for the padres. The site has survived for over 150 years as a ranch, a station for the Jackass Mail and Butterfield Stage routes, and much more.
In 1925 the Windmill House was built to generate electricity and pump water. Today it is a local historical landmark.
