Fishing Information

I've been fishing & boating all my life. I've gone boating in my dad's rowboat since the age of 6. My dad's older now and has a much larger boat too. I've always loved being out on the water, but I hated the fact that a few careless assholes had to ruin the boating sport by drinking and partying which now requires everyone to secure a boater's license.

I've been wanting to get a boat but didn't want go through the high maintenance of constant upkeep, registering boat & trailer every year, and finding a place to store it.

One day, my dad mentioned getting a canoe or kayak, citing that 1 day he would no longer be able to maintain the upkeep of his boat. I mentioned I was looking for the same but never considered a kayak, until we watched an episode of "Hank Parker Outdoors". Hank used a Hobie Outback Mirage kayak to fish "skinny" water. I'll admit, this was EXACTLY what I was looking for, but I would have never considered a kayak as a way to fish! I always thought that they were unstable, that it could easily tip over.

Since then, I've come to learn that there are different versions of kayaks. The kind I have is called an S.I.T. (Sit-On-Top). I can dangle my legs over the side while I fish (called "side saddle") and it will not tip. For more info on my kayak, please read the "Boat Information" below.

Personal Background

Hi, I'm Jeff, 42, married with no kids, I work full time for the state of CT as a courthouse jailer. I also own & run 2 web sites. One is a outdoor journal (http://www.CORE860.com), and the other is a web store (http://www.cafepress.com/CORE860_store) where I sell outdoor-themed decals & shirts. I am the owner/webmaster for both sites. I have started my own club called "North East Kayak Anglers" which is free to join if you have a kayak. I've made some decals & shirts for the club that are up for sale on Cafe Press. Click the link above to view.

Boat Information

I own a tan 12 ft Hobie Outback Mirage Fishing Kayak. It's outfitted with Hobie's patented Mirage-Drive pedal system that allows me to move through the water hands-free. I also have a milk crate converted to hold 3 rods/accessories. Currently, I'm saving up for a GPS/Fishfinder combo unit. My wife has the same kayak in caribbean blue. I love my kayak and wouldn't trade it for anything. I can go into any body of water, with depths up to 5 inches deep, and handles the open water extremely well. It's quiet, stable, safer for the environment, can be loaded in the back of my truck, has a load capacity of 400 lbs, tons of storage space, doesn't cost a dime to register, doesn't require any license to use, and will last a lifetime with little maintenance. What's better than that?
