Fishing Information

First started fishing when about 5-6 yrs. Born in Needles, Calif., along lower Colorado river. Best fishing trips were as a boy were along the lower Colorado river in the 1950's. Used to go downstream from Needles in 16' boat with 35 hp Evenrude motor. Would take trip down "Devil's Elbow" (cayon area along Colorado River, between Needles and Havasu Lake}. Havasu City was not there at the time, and Lake Havasu only had one small marina which was only accessible by dirt road or by boat. Old marina was for troops practicing in the desert in the 40's with Pattons army before WWII. The Marina was called "Site Six". My family used to always take 2 weeks around Easter and we would boat in the Havasu Lake area and camp on gravel and sand beaches near a place called Thompson's Bay (area today is near the London Bridge). We would camp for two weeks catching many, many large mouth bass and crappie. I remembered we used no plastic. but only crank baits which were trolled behind boat along shore line and points. One easter my Dad and I caught about 100 crappie and my Mom canned them in camp, over an old coleman stove using an old canning pressure cooker. Rarely did we see other campers around the lake but as time went by the word got out (great fishing and skiing paridise) and by the early 60's lake havasu City began to spring up after they paved the dirt road come in from Interstate 40(?).

Personal Background

Started fishing when I was about 5-6 yrs old. Born in Needles Ca., along lower Colorado River. I've been married but now divorced and live with my youngest son (12 yrs. old). I have 4 other sons and one daughter. I have two grandchildren (so far). I'm a wildlife biologist with graduate degrees in population ecology and large mammal ecology. I studied desert Bighorn Sheep to obtain an M.S. Degree from Arizona State University. I've conducted several research projects while working for the Navajo Nation (black bears and mule deer), bobcats, ferral burros, and others. I now work for the federal Government as a manager overseeing the restoration of the Salton Sea in souther California, near Palm Springs, Ca. I live in Yuma Arizona. I'm 55 years old and may retire with 30+ years with the gov't in the near future. i love to fish and hunt as do most of my children and younger grand children. I've been fishing from Cabos to north of Fairbanks, AK. I've hunted moose in Alaska, caught yellow fin tuna in the Gulf of California, hunted ducks on the south Platte river, and killed elk and deer in Colorado, New Mexico, nevada, and Arizona. I'm looking forward to retiring to do even more, God willing. I spend most of my free time raising my youngest son, watching TV, and fishing and hunting around Yuma, Az and within other areas of Arizona. As afamily. three sons, and my brother, we usually go on at least two quail hunting trips, one elk, and one deer hunting trips a year (when drawn for the larger game). Hunting season in the SW of Az, starts with dove season (first of Sept) and ends with a late javalina or duck hunt in January or Feb. Starting in March we begin to fish, mostly for large mouth bass along the very lower end of the Colorado river. My 34 year old son is now the fishing and hunting fanatic, as I seem to slow down with other challenges with age.
