L

Lace Tinsel
Three strands of tinseled thread twisted together.

Lanyard
A device to which an item is "tethered" so that it is close by when needed; e.g., glasses;

Larva Lace Body Material
Flexible hollow body material used for nymph bodies. Soft and realistic bodies can be tied. Also available larva lace nymph rib - solid 1/2 round nymph tying materials, and larva lace midge lace which is hollow and translucent.

Larva Lace Flytying Foam
Used for body build up techniques, with an overwrap of larva lace body material or nymph rib. Two types - closed cell for surface patterns, and open cell for wet fly patterns.

Lay down position
The position of the rod at the end of the forward cast, when the rod tip is pointed low toward the water’s surface.

Leader
The tapered section of monofilament between fly line and fly Leaders 205

Leadershy(ness)
Condition in fish that makes them "spooked" by leaders Leaders 205

Leader wallet
Compartmentalized "wallet", usually carried in the vest, used to store a variety of leaders for different uses;

Leader junction
Where the leader and fly line connect.

Legs
The legs of an adult fly are represented by the lower part of the hackle. Legs on nymph patterns are copied with a short hackle or hackle fibres.

Level fly line
A fly line without taper at all. Abbreviated (L). Level lines are difficult to cast because they lack a gradual decrease in weight. This decrease in weight transmits energy to the leader and fly which can minimize the disturbance when the fly touches the water. Newcomers should not try to learn to cast with a level fly line.

Lite Brite
An extra fine shredded and iridescent mylar sparkle hair ideal for flash and movement. Can be dubbed, or spun.

Line guard
The solid horizontal "bar(s)" between the two sides of a fly reel over which the fly line passes

Line hand
The hand that is free while making the basic pick up lay down cast. Holding the fly line with the line hand helps anglers achieve total control of the line and allows for more elaborate casts.

Line-in
Refers to use the process of bringing the line in/onto the reel

Line-out
Refers to the process of taking line off/out of the reel

Line speed
Refers to the velocity of the fly line in the air as it is being cast

Line weight
Term to classify fly lines by the weight of the first 30 feet

Load (loading)
Refers to the process of "cocking" a fly rod with the fly line by the application of the casting stroke

Loop Connection
A method of setting up a flyline/leader rig using loops tied in each section which can be interlocked for easy changing.

Loop-to-loop
The connection used when joining two different closed loops together. Joining the fly line and leader normally requires a loop-to-loop connection.

Lure Flash
Metallic synthetic substirute for marabou or other winging materials. Finer than flashbou and easier to handle for smaller flies. Provides lots of flash and action

Lusterelle
Trade name for a Canadian Floss.
