My words for the chowan river system is simple....to know it is to love it! In the last few years the bass fishing has fallen' off somewhat . Mostly due to the seriousness of hurricanes that have focused on the carolinas. It would seem that all of the extra water from the storms has flooded the swamps, in-turn this has turned over the rotting vegitation that lies on the bottom and has flushed it out through the streams and creeks into the river . since the year 2000 , the fishing for bass has been steadily declining. However, this past fall the huricane's took a different route and I have already seen some good signs in the creeks and their mouths....reports of 'speckles' (crappie) have began to filter down through the locals and the forecast for the 'white perch' is excellent this year! As most know, if you get a good return of herring and white perch in the spring it seems to balance the river system where great fishing for bream, bass, catfish, 'rock' (stripers) fish, all seem to base thier spawning upon the return of the spring herring run! I have been on the river twice this year, once just enjoying a nice winter afternoon day where in about 30 minutes I put four speckles in the boat just floating along in a creek drifting a live minnow. The second time out , I and a friend decided to see if any of the stripers (rock fish)had moved up river to the gatesville area. No bites of any kind , however, we did get word that a few were being caught in the maherren river not far from where it dumps into the chowan. This is a mid winter report and I hope to be able to give an update when the weather breaks and the dog woods start to bloom.
