There are rare sights of Sturgeon (They are illegal to catch) and sometimes from rainbow smelt and alewifes that migrate up this river.

LARGEMOUTH BASSIN'

The Charles River is the quintessential urban bass habitat. Lined with parks and public access forested areas, black bass, both largemouth and smallmouth can be caught virtually anywhere from the highway overpasses of Boston near the science museum to the submerged grass beds of Medfield. Simply put, there is nothing more exhilirating than having a bass slam a topwater plug on a placid windless indian summer afternoon, except maybe knockin' off that girl from high school you've been oodling over in the yearbook since 97. For all my novices, catching your first black bass is like graduating from 8th grade. I say 8th grade because Bass are startingly easy to catch, unlike Northern Pike and Striped Bass.

Spinnerbaits are the hands down best artificials for bass. They are snag proof, kick up a lot of commotion, are easy to manipulate in the water, come in a variety of styles, shapes, colors, etc, and are much cheaper than your average topwater rapalas or crankbaits. For locations, anywhere in the vicinity of lily pads, Bass are notorious for ambushing prey around lily pads and they even suspend themselves right underneath them. Also try bridge anchorages, pillings, feeder creek mouths, rock beds and downed/ submerged trees. If your casting for more than 10 - 15 minutes in one swim, move on. The beauty of the charles river is that you can cover a large amount of water in a short period of time. There are lots of Bass because the river receives very little fishing pressure along most of its bank. Good places where I have caught bass on a consistent basis are: Charles Bank Park, Storrow Lagoons, confluence of the muddy river (Back Bay Fens), Underneath B.U. Bridge around piers, Riverside Press Park, Weeks Bridge and Eliot Bridge (Cambridge side near the boathouses is especially good). I have caught Bass at all those locations. Also, the charles river is filled with Carp for all my Europeans comrades. Yellow Perch are also abundant and Pike are present on the upper reaches till around Watertown center. Best of Luck.
