Mesa Verde National Park - Established in 1906 to "preserve the works of man," Mesa Verde is the first national park of its kind, preserving both cultural and natural resources. The centerpiece of the park is the cluster of cliff-dwellings built by the Ancestral Puebloans. Take a walking tour through these amazing buildings, built beneath a protective ledge in the cliff. You'll see Cliff Palace, Balcony House, Spruce Tree House, Long House, and Step House, plus you'll have a chance to learn about Puebloan life and traditions. Elsewhere around the park, you'll find hiking trails, self-guided nature walks, and opportunities for photography and wildlife viewing. Take the 2.2 mile Point Lookout Trail for an incredible view from the mesa top or follow the Petroglyph Point Trail to see drawings made by these ancient people.

Durango and Silverton Railroad Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad - Founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879, the Durango-Silverton line started as a freight train, carrying gold and silver ore from the San Juan Mountains. Today, 125 years later, the train still operates, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives through river valleys and sunny landscapes. The rail line offers special packages like their Summer Excursion, private cars, and train charters. Take a one-day jaunt from Durango to Cascade Canyon or ride into Silverton for a day of shopping and sight-seeing. A number of special events occur throughout the year, from the Spring Mystery Train to the October Pumpkin Patch Express.
Alpine Glider - Just three miles north of Durango, you'll find the Durango Soaring Club, a group of glider pilots who love the serenity of sailing noiselessly through the air. You can take a ride with one of their excellent pilots in the Super Blanik L-23, a one-passenger only plane that can take a maximum weight of 260 lbs in the front seat. Rides last between ten and thirty-five minutes. Alternately, two people can go up in the Schweizer 2-32, a three-passenger sailplane (the pilot sits in the front, two passengers in the back seat side by side). These flights also range between ten and thirty-five minutes. What an incredible way to see the varied terrain of Southwestern Colorado!
