We target Lake Whitefish through the ice in a northern Minnesota lake, looking for 8-12 foot flats with some weedgrowth and quick access to a steep break into the main-lake basin. Crappie minnows suspended under a float anywhere in the water column will bring strikes. They sometimes come through right under the ice.

White fish can be readily caught in NW Ontario lake trout lakes by jigging a Thin Doctor spoon near the bottom in deep water. I have caught them in the Rainy River in Minnesota near Baudette on shiners fished on the bottom. Whitefish are excellent fighters.
