As day 3 proved to be, according to Pace, "the hardest day I've ever spent on my boat", the 7 pound lead he established on the first two days of competition turned out to be enough to edge out his competitors.

But in the end his approach outmatched his competition as he worked a Gambler Ugly Otter around weeds on sandy flats. This creature style bait proved to give him the edge he needed on the Red River to hoist his first Bassmaster Classic trophy.

However, VanDam’s return to Beeswax Creek on Lay Lake in 2010 proved to be a wise decision as he rattled his way to victory in his first of two consecutive World Champion Titles with the Strike King Red Eyed Shad.

He landed his catch by pitching a Texas-rigged Culprit worm around docks with submerged brush piles. His color of choice was none other than Red Shad. Two decades later it is still the choice of many anglers in the sport of fishing today. Tragically, Kerchal was killed in a plane crash just 5 months after claiming his title.

  • 1982 Bassmaster Classic Champion - Paul Elias

The "Kneel-and-Reel" technique can be traced back as early as 1966. And even Paul Elias admits he did not invent the technique. However, he played a huge roll in spreading the popularity of a technique that most had never heard of with his 1982 Bassmaster Classic win on the Alabama River when he used the "Kneel-and-Reel" to maximize the depth of his Norman Deep Little N. The art of deep cranking has evolved since 1982 into Long Lining and Deep Running Plugs, but some things never change. 35 years later and the Norman Deep Little N is still the choice of many anglers and a proven Championship Winner.
