Great lake for fishing out of a float tube. Very deep and clear. Spring fed and stays fairly cool all year. great for primative camping access only to N side of lake. Lake is no wake but small enough to get anywhere quickly in boat. Great bass fishing, tons of 1lb to 3lb bass several much larger. My personnal best is 6lbs. Lake is famous for bluegill bigger than the palm of your hand. Lots of cedar cover. Crickets are the bait of choice and can be purchased in Geary.

Hello All! As far as I'm concerned the "Horse" is the best kept secret in Oklahoma. My dad started taking me fishing at American Horse when I was 15 years old. I'm 48 now,so I guess that means I've been going to the "Horse" for 33 years now. It's by far my favorite out of the place spot. I've fished all over the lake from boat as well as from the bank. But believe it or not my two favorite places are about half-way down the dam, and about 30yds. east of the boat ramp, right at the opening of the cove. I've caught some beautiful cats there over the years. Lost two rods there also! I never have blue-gill fished the lake but plan on doing so in the near future. I've seen some of the biggest blue-gill I've ever seen come from the "Horse". American Horse is also the best camping spot I've ever had, I don't mind roughing it as there are no facilities. I usually camp in early January or February and then a few times during the summer until it gets so hot a person can't stand it. Believe me, if it's 100 degrees in Okc., it's at least 110 degrees at the "Horse". The same goes for Winter. If you like to get away from everything and everybody this is the place to go. In the past there were times that I wouldn't see another soul for 7 or 8 days. I loved it!! But since Outdoor Oklahoma did a story on the Lake a few years back a few more folks are starting to show up. I've also got to mention the night sky. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I would encourage anyone who is having a faith problem or is doubting God or doubting the existence of God to take a look at the night sky on a clear night. It's awesome! I didn't know we had that many stars. I've also got to mention that the people that do come to the "Horse" that I've met are some of the nicest and most conservation minded people I've ever met without exception. I guess I've said about all I can. Anyone who would like to e-mail me feel free to, I'll be sure to reply. I can be reached at [email protected]. Maybe we can do some fishin'.
