Lake Ontario Sport Fishing
Although Lake Ontario is the smallest of
the five Great Lakes, it's still huge when
compared to other bodies of salt water on
the globe. The lake is close to 200 miles
long, and at its widest point, it measures
over 50 miles. Ontario is deep, too. In
fact, the average depth is 283 feet, and
at its deepest points, it plunges to over
800 feet. Because of its great depth, the
entire surface of Lake Ontario rarely
freezes, so fishing can be done year
round. The lake had some problems with
pollution in the 1970s, but through
aggressive efforts, it's made a remarkable
rebound. Walleye have returned, and the
Coho salmon are thriving in Ontario, along
with the Chinook, or "king" salmon.
Lake Ontario is home to several desirable
fish species, but king salmon are
definitely the "kings" when it comes to
sportfishing. Several state and world
record fish have been landed here,
including a 46.4-pound king salmon that
measured 47 inches long. That's a lot of
fish! Lake Ontario king salmon are prized
for their brutal fighting ability, so just
imagine what kind of battle this big
bruiser delivered!
Before you pack your fishing gear and head
out for some great Lake Ontario king
salmon fishing, there are some important
points you need to consider. One is that
Ontario has more than 700 miles of shore,
along with numerous bays, islands, river
mouths, and shallow lagoons. There are
also some major sand bars, and weather
patterns on the lake can change in an
instant. What does this mean for anglers
on the lake?
These constants and variables mean that
you'll need a Lake Ontario guide or a Lake
Ontario fishing charter. You want a
"fishing friend" who knows the lake's
geography and who knows the most likely
places for king salmon to be found. On
your own, you can waste a lot of valuable
time and effort searching over 7,500
square miles of water for Lake Ontario
king salmon!
There are numerous Lake Ontario king
salmon fishing charters available. One of
the best is Ace Charters, operated by
Captain James "Ace" Samia. Ace Charters
has been in business for 13 years, and
Captain Jimmy has more than 30 years of
fishing experience. In addition to being
an expert angler, he's also certified in
First Aid and CPR.
When you book a Lake Ontario fishing
charter with Ace, you'll board their 2009
28-foot Baha Cruiser, complete with toilet
facilities. You'll also be using the best
equipment available, along with some lures
that aren't readily available any longer -
except with Captain Jim. Captain Jim has
connections with top fishing gear
manufacturers, too, so his clients often
get the chance to try state-of-the-art
lures and flies that aren't even available
to the public yet.
If you want to get in some of the Lake
Ontario king salmon fishing action, book a
summer or fall trip with Ace Charters.
Enjoy a day, a weekend, or a multi-day
fishing trip on Lake Ontario's "shining
waters." Captain Jimmy can even arrange
discount lodging for you at an amazing
price!
