Scott Glorvigen RCL Champion Reveals his Winning Strategies Like most successful anglers, Team Yamaha's Scott Glorvigen has developed his winning ways through practice, practice, practice and a desire to excel. This combination, set up by a life-long love of fishing, paid off for Glorvigen when he won the first Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Championship held in Green Bay, WI in October. The win netted him $300,000, the richest award in walleye tournament history. His winning catch was three walleye weighing 11 lbs., one ounce. Here's the winning story in his words:. Boat control and proper presentation are crucial elements in successful walleye fishing. The best anglers know they can use their small motors to hold them on the fish. On my own boat, I use a motor I helped develop — the new Yamaha T8 high thrust 4-stroke motor. This quiet outboard showed me how easy it is to stay on the fish despite winds and currents. The time I spent on the water using the Yamaha T8 really paid off. Small auxiliary outboards are also very effective for back-trolling and with the Yamaha four-stroke, there's not the unpleasant oily exhaust associated with older two-stroke kickers. In the tournament, I found a narrow 3-4 feet deep channel connecting the main water flow from the dam that fed this spot. This main current artery naturally funneled walleyes to this key spot as the water level changed throughout the day. Understanding how fish would react to the changing water levels was critical in determining the best presentation. Years of steelhead fishing on the streams of the Great Lakes allowed me to understand how fish position themselves in fast river currents and how important it is for the lure to be in the fishÕs strike zone. Small floating crankbaits worked best below the dam because they would stay in the fish's face provoking a strike. The most productive baits were CD5 Cordell Wally Divers, Smithwick Rattlin' Rouges and #5 Shad Raps. All of these baits had two things in common: they ran properly in fast current and sported a Fire Tiger color pattern. This combination of lure size, shape, action and color was hot... hot enough for me to head home with $300,000 cash, a great bonus to doing something I love, which is to fish for walleye.
