Go small when the bite is slow

Go small when the bite is slow Go small when the bite is slow

By Dwayne Zboril

I can't begin to tell you how many fisherman have wasted a golden opportunity when fishing for bass on a slow day with limited action. I have turned thesed days around and had some of the best experiences of my life when everyone else is mumbling and grumbling about the fishing.

When the bite is slow don't get discouraged, switch tactics and pull out a smaller bait and test it out. I carry 2 tackle boxes filled with ultralight lures. I will list a few that have had the best results when the bite is tough.

  • Rapala rattlin wrap ( mini )
  • rattle trap ( tiny trap ) 1/8 oz
  • itsy bitsy bug ( 1/8 or 1/16 oz ) strike king ( baby buzz bait )
  • strike king ( min spinnerbait )
  • baby rattlin chug bug
There are countless numbers of ultralight baits that are smaller in profile but have the same fish attracting ability. I have landed more big bass on small baits than the big baits. Small baits present an easy target for the fish and when they dont have to work as hard to feed they go nuts. I will use small baits routinely and land good numbers of fish. A fast running crank bait in the 1/16 oz size is deadly for big bass when the bite is slow.

Ultralight tackle should not be overlooked, try it out you will not be disappointed with the results. Contact

Great article, people forget to downsize lure selection to stir up the bite of big fish.
