Flathead Fundamentals

Flathead Fundamentals Flathead Fundamentals

Going for these monstrous predators is more like using live bait for muskies than fishing for any other species of catfish.

Big Flatheads are ugly creatures,at least if you poll the average fisherman. They lie on the bottom of some lake of river pool and do very little, other than eat once and a while. They don't fight, they dont leap or hit a lure, and they're dumb as a fence post to boot. The only people who bother to catch them are troutliners who pick one up once and a while, and their only redeeming features are that they're not to bad to eat, and at least get big enought to have bragging value.

Are you reading these words and nodding your head sagely, because I've just repeated every thing you've long known to be true about flathead cats?

If Mr. Martin wrote this to irritate anglers who DO actually know about flatheads, mission accomplished. If not, then he is obviously an iggnorant person who is prone to listening to false information instead of really learning about these tremendous gamefish; let alone actually catching them!

Either Mr. Martin wrote this to create some discussion or he has no idea what catfishing is about. All large species of fish are deserving of respect whether flatheads, carp, salmon, musky, blues, etc. Mr. Martin's article doesn't even deserve this much of my time.

Mr. Martin must be doing something wrong. If he were catching trophy flatheads on tackle matched to size I am sure he would change his mind about the fight. I have to ask have you ever caught a 30+ pound flathead?

Sadly, Mr Martin has no idea what he is talking about. He clearly has never fished for Flathead Cats and is merely repeating what he has been told by other people who have never fished them either. I have pursued Flatheads and other species of fish including Steelhead and Chinook Salmon and have found that they (Flatheads) are cautious, hard fighting and quite worthy of respect as gamefish. Mr Martin should consider actually checking his facts by spending a few nights not catching Flatheads before submitting another ill-informed opinion.

This review has no value at all to someone that wants any info on fishing for flathead catfish and me personally, I have caught a ton of flatheads over the last 20 years and consider them one of the most worthy fish to persue in fresh water. The person that wrote this article evidently didn't do his homework and has not fished for them with a rod and reel to see how much they will fight.
